#1012 closed Bug (fixed)

don't show the tray by default

Reported by: kiddo Owned by: charles
Priority: Normal Milestone: 1.30
Component: GTK+ Client Version: 1.21
Severity: Normal Keywords: usability

Description

As per the gnome HIG, transmission should not display an icon in the notification area (aka "system tray") unless the user explicitely asks for that in the preferences.

Rephrasing this: the default behavior should be to not have a tray icon. Some reasons behind this are:

  • the current behavior is cluttering the desktop environment by default
  • the transmission tray icon does not indicate progress
  • rhythmbox is *not* a good example of correct behavior (gnome bug 317982)
  • possible unintended effects like mentionned in issue #611
  • I want transmission to behave consistently with other apps. When I hit the close button, I mean "close". Transmission should behave like a good gnome citizen, not replicate Windows' broken design ;)

I am not sure if it's a good idea to add progress. It seems to be impossible as some users can have too many torrents at the same time. Maybe I am missing something or not understand?

Umm.. I prefer it to be in notification area over applet. The applet is non-portable across in any WM/Desktop. Transmission does notify users when it finishes download and offers to open folder.

+1 and +1 ;-)

tested and transmission indeed does not show the icon by default, and has a "tray icon" checkbox in the Display menu. This is great, thank you for the quick fix! :)
