The new tracker list rocks but it should be based on priority

Reported by: apianti Owned by: charles

Component: GTK+ Client Version: 1.22+
Severity: Normal Keywords:

The tracker list should provide an easier format. You should only need to move the trackers up and down in the list to prioritize them. It appears to me even if you set all the trackers to the same tier it still only uses the first tracker in the list. I may be wrong, but ease of use is the best feature of transmission.

I don't understand what you're asking here. Could you go into a little more detail?

Transmission tries to follow the multitracker spec, so the tiers are the only prioritization that we use, and we only use one tracker at a time. All the others are fallbacks in case the first one fails.

  • Resolution set to invalid
  • Status changed from new to closed

Transmission will only connect to one tracker at a time, as the specs require.

I think that the idea would be so that the user could use the tracker list to reorder the tiers manually.

I've come across torrents where incorrect implementation of the multitracker spec has led to the first tier tracker connects successfully but has no peers, while other trackers have peers. My way to get around that had originally been to manually edit the torrent, but with new tracker list in Transmission I would remove the trackers in tier order until I got one that the tracker index said had peers.

This could be accomplished in two ways from an interface perspective. The user could select a tracker and use +/- buttons to change the tracker priority, or a user could drag and drop trackers within the list to order priority. I'd consider the latter to require the least change in the appearance of the tracker list. I'd understand if this idea is considered to be bloat, and since it's something I can work around at the moment I'd personally place a low priority on it. This is also applicable to the mac client.

Replying to livings124:

I don't think this ticket is about connect multi-tracker at once if I understand it correct. :-)

If I understand this ticket correct. In the 'Tier', you are asking to remove Tier (number) and use the up/down method by the top is always check first to bottom at last? I think I agree with apianti and jay for user usability, because what if users put three or more same number in Tier? Kind of confuse.

One feature that I would like to add is allow me to right click on one of tracker in list and tell it to connect it, then it will disconnect old tracker and reconnect to the one that I have selected.

Note: See TracTickets for help on using tickets.
