cannot change speed until checked the box

With the limit speed checkboxes, one cannot adjust the number until one checks the box. This means one ends up causing the connection to endure several seconds of the (perhaps very undesirable) old speed that was sitting in the entry field as one hurries with the mouse and keyboard to change it to the new speed, perhaps overshooting a bit and then going back.

Even if changes don't kick in for several seconds anyway, it is uncomfortable to rush the user in this fashion, and not allow him to to feel he can "hit the ground running at the speed he desires."

There is a tradeoff involved here.

I agree that there's a brief period where the limit is enabled at a value not chosen by the user, but IMO the visual feedback aspect of the current setup is more important for reminding users whether or not the speed limits are currently enabled.
