#2367 closed Bug (worksforme)

No connections under 10.6, but those in the house running 10.5 can connect.

Reported by: felixtc Owned by: livings124
Priority: Highest Milestone: None Set
Component: Mac Client Version: 1.74
Severity: Critical Keywords: mac os x snow leopard 10.6

Description

My current operating system as of yesterday is 10.6. After upgrading and installing the application I found that no matter the health on a torrent I was no longer able to connect. Now for those that are still running 10.5 in my house is able to connect just fine.

That's strange, I'm having no problems under 10.6. Could you make sure the installation didn't change any network settings, firewall settings, router settings, etc.

comment:3 Changed 13 years ago by felixtc

Well the strange thing is that my internet connection is fine because I am not losing any connection with my router but I did notice that neither transmission nor utorrent can get a connection. I did a clean install of Snow leopard to avoid any hiccups. Have you come across this issue before and what version of Transmission are you running? I tried even the nightly build but still the same result.

I do have a question for you since you are running snow leopard. Did you install Rosetta? I don't have it install and I would also like to add that no matter what port I use it keeps displaying port closed.

comment:5 Changed 13 years ago by livings124

It sounds like it's something that was changed in your setup. Perhaps the firewall is now on? If other apps can't make connections, it could be OS-releated.

comment:6 Changed 13 years ago by felixtc

Well as for it being OS related it is not because I just performed a Erase and install. And with no other app installed it is still unable to connect to any peers no matter the health of the torrent. This is a little strange because it works fine under 10.5 and you are running it under 10.6 so what is different with your version of transmission compared to mine? What is different to your mac os x version to mine?

I think there needs to be a little more stringent testing under 10.6 because there is clearly something missing from this version. I am hoping there is someone out there with the same issues as me and was able to get it resolved.

You haven't acknowledged my question. Did you check your firewall and other network settings? You say uTorrent isn't work either - doesn't that tell you something?

comment:8 Changed 13 years ago by bradfordcp

I had the same issue under 10.6 (with the firewall turned off). I was able to connect after disabling the "Prefer encrypted peers" option on the "Peers" tab in the application preferences.

Hopefully this helps you troubleshoot.

comment:9 Changed 13 years ago by felixtc

Firewall is off and as for the network settings they have not been modified at all. This only started happening after installing snow leopard. Yes neither application works but i took some time to check the windows laptop that is in other room and it is able to download fine so there is nothing wrong with our router settings. I turned off the prefer encrypted peers but still no joy.

On the windows laptop that we have here it is running Vuze. And given the issue I am having it is clearly something blocking my connection from either app just not sure what.

comment:10 Changed 13 years ago by felixtc

Also I verified my firewall settings that are built-in to my router and there has been no changes to those settings either the other two PCs have the same settings as me but they are able to download the same torrent file but I can't. So this is proving a issue with the application than my network. Any suggestions or can you work on a resolution to this issue please?

Are there any output messages in Console.app, or any relevant messages in the built-in message log?

comment:12 Changed 13 years ago by felixtc

There are no messages in the built-in message log of transmission. I looked at the console and there aren't any messages there either for Transmission. Took a look at the activity monitor to see if the application was being recognized by the OS and it is. With like 0.6 CPU percentage usage.

Are there any messages in Console.app that look network related?

comment:14 Changed 13 years ago by felixtc

Took a look and there are no messages associated with networking issues at the time of launching or running the application.

Would not having Rosetta install have anything to do with my issues?

Replying to felixtc:

No. Are you running in 64-bit mode? If so can you try 32-bit mode orvice-versa?

I am running in 64-bit mode and the activity monitor sees transmission as a intel 64 bit kind. How can Transmission be switched over to 32-bit?

Get-info and click "launch in 32-bit mode"

Sorry still the same results 0 peers and 0 seeders.

When is the next update due? Maybe then this will be corrected?

  • Summary changed from Snow Leopard No Connection to No connections under 10.6, but those in the house running 10.5 can connect.

felixtc: just to make sure I'm understanding your report correctly...

  • the 10.5 and 10.6 boxes are both testing out the same torrent from the same tracker, but at different times?
  • Is the tracker announce succeeding on both OSes (see the "Tracker" tab in the torrent inspector)
  • Is there more than one tracker in the list in the "Tracker" tab?
  • Are you able to download from a different tracker? For example, could you please try this torrent (which reportedly has ~200 seeders) and see if you're able to connect?

Ok that torrent works just fine. So what is causing me from not being able to download others? I took a look at the tracker for the torrent I was trying to download and noticed it was piratebay. Can than be the real reason behind my issues? Seeing how there are so many torrents linked to that site. Is their a way I can use a different tracker all the time no matter tracker linked to the torrent I am trying to download?

  • Resolution set to fixed
  • Status changed from new to closed

It seems everything is back to normal. I am not sure why I was having a issue earlier but I think it was just the particular torrents I was trying to connect to. Maybe they weren't updating correctly even though the stated they have over >100 seeders. Thanks for all your help with this issue.

Can this really be closed? I had the same issue, but it was because of the encryption box I had checked. Should I file a new ticket? I would like to have encryption support...

comment:28 Changed 13 years ago by livings124

bradfordcp: Sounds like your isp might be interfering with encrypted peers. The code hasn't changed in a long while, and that wouldn't be unheard of.

Alright, thanks for the help.
