#2368 closed Enhancement (fixed)

Change "system tray" to "notification area" in the gtk+ client.

Description

Attached is a patch to change "system tray" to "notification area" in the gtk+ client.

The rationale is that it is called Notification Area in Gnome (the applet implementing it is called that, and the Gnome Human Interface Guide also uses that name: http://library.gnome.org/devel/hig-book/stable/desktop-notification-area.html.en )

(A longer "rant" can be found here: http://ploum.frimouvy.org/?219-the-aristocratic-desktop-part-3-there-s-no-tray-icon-in-gnome

As an aside: apparantly the Windows equivalent isn't officially named system tray: http://blogs.msdn.com/oldnewthing/archive/2003/09/10/54831.aspx - but all the same KDE and desktop.org has adopted that very name: http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/SystemTrayProtocol )

I guess that the gtk+ client primarily is used in a Gnome environment, so using the Gnome terminology maybe makes sense?

  • Version set to 1.74

Sounds good to me but it breaks translations, so even though it's a minor change it'll have to wait for 1.80.
