#2521 closed Bug (fixed)

Garbled messages from trac

Reported by: dairiki Owned by: titer
Priority: Low Milestone: None Set
Component: Wiki Version:
Severity: Normal Keywords: trac

Description

Recently I registered for an account on this trac. (I wanted to file a ticket.) The registration appeared to go well, and I was able to log in. Attempts to create a ticket received an Error: Forbidden - TICKET_CREATE privileges are required to perform this operation message.

Also, I noticed that whenever I was logged in to the trac, there would be a yellow box just below the page header of each page which said something like

Warning: <acct_mgr.web_ui.MessageWrapper object at 0xc225b0c>

As it turns out, the reason I could not create tickets was that the trac has an email confirmation process --- one can not post tickets until his email address has been confirmed. Due to spam filtering on my end, I did not get the email confirmation message from trac. (The confirmation is sent from a return address of <trac@transmissionbt.com> --- that address fails CBV, which is why my mail server was rejecting it.)

I'm guessing that the garbled warning message was trying to tell me that I still needed to confirm my email address. (I do not think this fact was mentioned elsewhere in the registration process.)

Of course, the warning message would have been much more useful if the text of the message were displayed instead of its machine address. :-)

If it helps anyone currently stuck in the confirmation process, a resend of the confirmation email can be requested at http://trac.transmissionbt.com/verify_email. Anyhow,

I haven't seen any of these errors after titer upgraded our copy of trac, so that seems to have fixed it.

Marking this ticket as closed, but feel free to reopen if you encounter the error again.

IIRC a user reported this a few days ago. Reopening until we confirm.

I've just confirmed that it's still a problem.

If you'd like to reproduce the problem without creating a new test login name, visit /prefs and change your email address — changing it to a fictitious address like nobody@example.com will work, or if you have an alternate real address, you could use that. After updating your email address you will notice the garbled messages at the top of every trac page (and you'll no longer be able to open tickets — you’ll probably lose other privileges as well, but I didn’t check for that).

(To regain your privileges, change your email address back to the real one, wait for the confirmation email from trac, and click the verification link in the confirmation email. If necessary, you can request a re-send of the confirmation email at /verify_email.)

Upgrading the AccountManager? plugin fixed the garbled warning. Still need to create the trac@… address, though.

trac@… email created.
