Sounds like the configure script failed due to a missing dependency. If I had to guess, configure couldn't find one of the developer packages for gettext or glib or gtk.

Regardless, this isn't a Transmission bug. I just did a fresh checkout and it works fine. Look a little more closely at the error messages that configure gave /before/ the "now type make" lines to see if it gives you any clues... usually configure's pretty good about at least giving a hint.

Other things to try:

  1. Try one of the nightly build tarballs instead @ http://build.transmissionbt.com/job/trunk-linux/
  1. Visit the #transmission irc channel at freenode and ask someone for help.
