#2599 closed Enhancement (wontfix)

Alternate Speed When Only Seeding

Reported by: sgtbob Owned by: livings124
Priority: Normal Milestone: None Set
Component: Transmission Version: 1.76
Severity: Normal Keywords:

I think a great additional option would be the ability to set an alternate speed when only seeding.

You have your standard upload speed setting, but an optional speed you can set to kick in when your downloads complete.

Ala, uTorrent and Vuze.

I don't think this feature is very useful.

Not trying to be an ass, but how could it not be useful?

Torrents are all about give & take, i.e. you should give back what you take.

So, you want your downloads to finish quick, but what about your uploads, if they are consistently limited to a portion of bandwidth when you are not using the bandwidth for anything else, that seems like a waste to me.

If I have something downloading overnight and it finishes while I am sleeping, in this instance you have a good portion of your bandwidth wasted, as you are hardly going to be getting out of bed in the middle of the night to change your upload speed. (I used sleeping as an example, but this also applies when you are at work, or out for the day/evening...). Not everyone can access the Web UI when not at home, I.e. my work firewall is ridiculously strict and I am sure this applies to a lot of others.

This only needs to be an option so people who want to use it can, or people who don't can continue as they are.

Like I said, I don't want to sound like an ass, and in all fairness you guys don't have to work on Transmission, but you are, I am grateful and you are doing a fine job. I am just asking that you consider this a little more.

Thank you.

Oh, I agree that you could make a plausible use case for it. However I don't think it's a feature that very many people would use, so to my mind it goes against Transmission's goals of keeping it simple.

That's fair, sure you can't blame a guy for trying. :)

Thanks for taking the time to come back and describe the use case for the feature. You'd be surprised at how many people don't bother to do that. Feel free to continue to report any other bugs you may find.

  • Resolution set to wontfix
  • Status changed from new to closed

Re-reading this, I'm going to have to agree with charles - I don't think all too many people would use this, maybe a handful at best.

user "ofir" came by Irc on 12 Mar 2010 and was politely insistent that this is an important feature.

he also cited a forum thread where two more people requested this feature -- one in 2007 and one in 2008.
