#3120 closed Bug (duplicate)

Preallocation=2 doesn't work when manually selecting individual files

Reported by: gtdaqua Owned by:
Priority: Normal Milestone: None Set
Component: Transmission Version: 1.92
Severity: Normal Keywords: preallocation preallocation=2

Transmission Version: 1.92 (10363)
File System: Ext3
Operating System: Linux 2.6.x on Thecus NAS

Downloaded a torrent that has about Ten 2G files. Select only one file to be downloaded and verified that 2G was allocated instantly for that file on the hdd.

After completion of that one file, I selected another 2G file and noticed that download started quickly. I checked manually after half hour and saw that file was allocated 175MB only. It should have allocated the full 2G. Now I guess this file will be fragmented heavily.

Thanks for taking the time to report this issue to make Transmission better.

In the torrent's list of files, was this new file adjacent to the first one that you downloaded? My guess is that it shared a piece with that file, and therefore to get that half-piece, a .part file for the second file got created.

We intentionally don't preallocate the adjacent, unwanted files because of the more common case... say you only ever wanted the first file; Transmission would use up 2 GiB to preallocate that second file, just for half a piece.

This sounds like maybe a side-effect of the same problem addressed by ticket #532.
