#3167 closed Bug (invalid)

I can't login to this trac system with my real email

Reported by: Astara Owned by: John Clay
Priority: High Milestone: None Set
Component: Website Version: 1.92
Severity: Critical Keywords: stu

Description

I have to use a generic gmail addr to register, but I can't change it to my real email addr after I sign up either due to some blacklisting problem.

Where is it being blacklisted? I would like to remove the blacklist from my end, as I'm not trying to black list you and I'm sure if it is my ISP, they don't want to either, so I'd like to find out who it is that is black listing you and how it is that it is affecting me.

Could I see the headers of the email that was bounced back?

It seems like it never actually reached 'tlinx.org', but was somehow cut off upstream? If so I'll take it up with my provider, but I maybe changing providers soon -- but whos to say but that I might not have the same problem with them as well.

It's also neigh impossible to contact an admin if you can't sign up until I was told I could if I used a bogus address.

Great verification system -- use a real address get ignored, but use a bogus address and signup works just great.

Um...anyone besides me think that's makes the email a stupid requirement?

Don't know if I should open a separate bug for this, but the forum doesn't allow changing the email, so on it I get: Login The specified username is currently inactive. If you have problems activating your account, please contact a board administrator. ... However, there is no way on the forum to contact the board administrator.

Does this count?

We're looking into the email issue, as it's not a known issue on our end. We don't restrict email domains in the Trac, but we do ban specific domains in the forum to counter spam. Your domain is not banned there, and I have manually activated your account.

My mail to you from Mon, Apr 19, 2010 at 9:14 PM contains the error message that showed up in our mail log.

The difference here is that your "bogus" address went through an ISP that isn't actively blocking us. For your "real" address you're using an ISP that's actively blocking us, and then reporting the issue to us instead of the ISP... though we're not doing the blocking and we don't have any influence over your ISP.

Don't get me wrong -- I'm wasn't blaming you for the blocking, but the website's design in several places in the wiki and in the forum said to contact an admin if I had problems....yet there was no place to contact an admin.... Everything I tried told me I wasnt' authorized and to contact an admin -- now THAT was frustrating.

As for the email bound...I'd be surprised if my ISP knowingly was bouncing it. More than likely they use some third party black list somewhere and that list is misconfigured. I'v been with my ISP for about 10 years, and don't recall them ever blocking someone before this (of course I'm changing ISP's soon...my old ISP only offers DSL, and with cable I can get 16Mb/2.75Mb vs. on DSL my max was 3Mb/650K. Sigh. Thanks for the manual add....I'm tring to do too much at once and getting frustrated when things don't work as fast as I would like...;-)
