#3444 closed Bug (invalid)

Downloading 2 of more torrents simultaneously causes kernel panics

Reported by: RobotScientist Owned by:

Component: Transmission Version: 2.03
Severity: Normal Keywords:

Description

When downloading two or more torrents, either via .torrent files or from a magnetized transfer, a kernel panic (KP) is triggered in the OS (OSX 10.6.4). When downloading one torrent at a time via the same method as previous, no kernel panic is triggered. The time taken to trigger the KP is not fixed, i.e., it may happen at the beginning of a transfer, or at anytime before completion. Can be replicated if necessary. Problem is localized to TransmissionBT as other torrenting programs (uTOrrent, BitTyrant?) do not produce KPs when downloading 2 or more torrents simultaneously.

OS generated crash logs are available if necessary.

Sounds like a system/network issue to me. Please try limiting the number of peer connections, number of active transfers, and the bandwidth limits to lower values.

Are there optimum values? I had peers set to 3000 (for both global and active transfers), with no maximum active transfers, and no bandwidth limits.

I've changed the values to 1000 peers (global and active transfers), with active transfers and max seeders @ 3, and implemented bandwidth limits.

Lower is safer for peers and bandwidth. Are you seeing issues with the adjusted settings?

I wanted to say no, but I just had a kernel panic. Transmission settings are as follows: 500 peers (global & active), 3 active transfers and max seeders, 200KB/s download 50KB/s upload.

I don't think it's the system, as I have been having KP's since late june and have had the apple store replace my logic board 3 times. I only seem to be getting them while downloading more than 1 torrent.

Try only one transfer at once, and less peers.

So you're saying that your system isn't prone to kernel panics because it used to be prone to kernel panics. ;)

What I'm saying is that if it was a hardware problem, the situation would have been rectified with new hardware. As I am still having the problem, despite 3 new logic boards, I think it is safe to say that it is more likely software related.

Please see the attached log for the most recent KP. 200 peers, limited bandwidth, limited connections, single download.

RobotScientist?, does this problem still persist in 2.10? :)

Sorry for the delay ion the response, but since the problem originally occurred, I switched to uTorrent in the hopes that the issue would be resolved. Unfortunately, since then, I still get KPs. I have had the motherboard and processor replaced at least 3 times to no avail. I feel that it's an OS issue that will only be resolved with a repair or format.

So to answer your question, yes I still get KPs, but I no longer feel that Transmission is the culprit.
