It would be nice if Transmission had a preference to prevent sleep only when downloading.

Currently, the two checkboxes under Preferences > General > Prompt user for removal/quit have nested checkboxes for "Only when transfers are downloading."

Under Preferences > Network > System sleep, please add a nested "Only when transfers are downloading" checkbox.

I don't much like this idea for the GTK+/Qt clients, but this request appears to be for the Mac client...

That'd be kinda annoying if it would still sleep when seeding. I'm going to close this as overkill.

I'd like to reopen this issue as this is not overkill but rather a very useful feature request. Think of it as downloading has a higher priority which is a very valid case.
