#3779 reopened Enhancement

stop seeding after total time

Reported by: sam54m Owned by: livings124
Priority: Normal Milestone: None Set
Component: Transmission Version: 2.12
Severity: Normal Keywords:

i have found several times that after i finish downloading a torrent, it has been marked bad on the tracker and most leechers disappear, so it is not possible to meet the 'stop seeding at ratio' criteria. so i rely on the 'stop seeding when inactive for' criteria to stop those. but since the torrent is still on the tracker, leechers do appear for a short time, grab a little, then disappear. so they reset the inactive time of the torrent in transmission. i would like a more generic 'stop seeding after ... time' option to prevent these "zombie" torrents from remaining active.

note, most ratio-based trackers only care about total seeding time (usually 24 hours), and don't care if the torrent is inactive or not. although i have seen some trackers require that the seeding time start after you are considered a full seed, i.e. after you have completely downloaded all the data.

  • Component changed from Mac Client to Transmission

This is covered by #1408

This does not appear to be covered by #1408. Using the mac client (r11626) I now see the total elapsed time that the torrent has been seeding, but that doesn't affect the seeding time limit. If I specify I only want torrents to seed for 48 hours, I still see them seeding 72 hours later, because the current limit only applies to _inactive_ seeding time. This ticket is specifically requesting a limit based upon _total_ seeding time.

I agree this is a separate ticket from #1408 but don't see a lot of demand for this feature.

tmuser, if you wanted to code this for your own use, you'd probably change the code in libtransmission/torrent.c's tr_torrentCheckSeedLimit() function by adding a third clause for "If we're seeding and we reach our total seeding time limit"

I think this is a highly demanded feature and the number one reason to advise people to use other clients. Many trackers nowadays don't have a required ratio, but instead a required seedtime. It would really be great to see this feature in transmission, because the idle-seedtime feature just doesn't fit the use-case.

I also noticed what TeNtaLGONAmY mentioned. I use some trackers that use seed time instead of ratio so this feature would be a big plus.

Patch that includes seed-time

comment:7 Changed 6 years ago by TeNtaLGONAmY

I've just added a patch that was made in a discussion on IRC. The patch is tested and includes seed-time in Transmission. It adds the "time-seeding-limit" and "time-seeding-limit-enabled" keys in settings.json.

What it doesn't have is "seedTimeLimit" and "seedTimeMode" endpoints in the RPC API. And also the seed-time isn't part of the calculation of the "Time remaining" metric in the web UI. There are also no UI elements/settings at all.

I think the UI part isn't that important, but the API endpoints are.

I know I'm a total newbie here, but I'd reopen this. It was marked closed 4 years ago (due to no interest?). A lot has changed since 2012. I do believe - as mentioned above - that there is a need for this as more trackers change their rules from mandatory ratio to seed time. (Although I don't know how can we measure interest in this) Also we have a patch which is always a good start.

Agreed. This feature is in demand!
