    1 I thought I had addressed this already, but since you've asked about it again in the forums I guess I wasn't clear. For posterity's sake of the people reading this ticket: prior to 2.12 the development team had almost zero feedback on proxies. My feeling was that the code wasn't very good and that few people used it. I decided to remove the feature, intentionally without announcement, to see how many people noticed, and to use that feedback to determine how important proxies are.

    33In retrospect, this should have involved more steps. An IRC user (jlouis) suggested I try Keith Packard's "fail-safe method for the removal of cruft from an old code base" outlined at http://lwn.net/Articles/354408/ ... solid advice IMO.
