#4198 closed Translation (worksforme)

Should assign translations to Launchpad Translators instead of Ubuntu Translators

Reported by: Malaria Owned by:

Ubuntu Translators aims to translate apps and docs which are specific to Ubuntu and its derivatives.

On the contrary, Launchpad Translators' goal is to translate software hosted on Launchpad. See

I think it would be better for Transmission to assign Launchpad Translators. I noticed that Ubuntu translators sometime translate in a specific Ubuntu series instead of translating trunk (which, however, is consistent with their role). For example, currently the Transmission French translation is completed on Natty, but it's only 80% on trunk.

Thank you for this suggestion.

From some quick comparisons of the two projects, it looks to me that ubuntu-translators has many more translation teams, and more members per team, than launchpad-translators. Also, it looks like ubuntu-translators handles non-Ubuntu-specific upstream packages like Docky and VLC.upstream packages that aren't Ubuntu-specific, such as VLC and Docky.

However, I don't know the background here. If launchpad-translators is a new project that's going to be pulling in more groups and translators and will be taking on more of the "upstream" workload, then maybe it would make sense to reconsider this later... but for now my opinion is that the current setup is working well enough.

Usually, a local ubuntu-translators team is a member of the local launchpad-translators team. So, in most languages, lp-l10n have currently more members than u-l10n.
(In this page numbers, u-l10n is just one member. Check a team homepage to see the relevant "active members" number).

Missing language teams in lp-l10n usually means that the relative u-l10n teams are not really active anymore (unfortunately).

For the background, lp-l10n was created 4 years after u-l10n (2 years ago if you prefer). That's why it started as a subteam of u-l10n for most languages and that's why projects like VLC, Docky or Transmission assigned u-l10n when they hosted their translations on Launchpad (there was just nothing else at that time).

On a side note, this change was suggested to me by a u-l10n-french admin (I'm the owner of lp-l10n-french).

Thank you for your suggestion.

However, the Transmission team has been working with ubuntu-translators for over three years now and have no complaints with the work being done. I believe we switched to ubuntu-translators at their request for QC reasons.

If ubuntu-translators is changing focus and no longer wants to translate upstream projects and wants to drop projects like docky, vlc, and transmission, that would be a different issue. But from my POV, things are working fine right now, and since it ain't broke, I don't want to change anything. :)

This isn't anything against launchpad-translators; only that I'm happy with the current setup and don't see any reason to change it.
