Transmission hangs for several seconds-minutes when downloading multiple large torrents

Description
Have several torrents approaching or over 100 gigs loaded into transmission. All are high bandwidth, large number of peer downloads. Transmission becomes utterly unresponsive for several seconds to minutes when manipulating UI to change download settings, individual torrent settings, adding or removing torrents. CPU usage for transmission is under 5 percent when hung. All I get is beach ball when I hover my mouse over the window.
Late '08 Aluminum Macbook 2.4 ghz core 2 duo 4 gig DDR3 500 gb WD Blue HDD 750 gb external 3.5" (usb) WD Black HDD OS X 10.6.7
Comcast cable, I get about 3 megabytes/second at night peak, hovers around 1.5-2 megabytes/second. System is on wifi. Downloads are spread between the two drives.
