#4537 reopened Enhancement

Improve "No Data Found" error message and recovery behavior

Reported by: x190 Owned by: jordan
Priority: Normal Milestone: None Set
Component: Transmission Version: 2.33
Severity: Normal Keywords: No data found

Description

Since a high number of users struggle to recover from this error, I've tried to come up with a more helpful error message while still keeping the character count acceptable.

Original: No data found! Ensure your drives are connected or use "Move Data File To...". To re-download, remove the torrent and re-add it.

Suggested: No data found! Ensure your drives are mounted and re-select download location of data with "File->Move Data File To…". To re-download, remove and re-add the torrent.

Since, if "File->Move Data File To…" is correctly done, the application now knows the location of the data, the error should auto-cleared and the torrent auto-resumed (if it was initially in that state) in order to avoid further user confusion.

I've tried to choose each word carefully according to the situation the user might actually encounter. "connected" to "mounted" as a drive might be connected but not powered-up or mounted. "connected or use "Move Data File To..." " to "mounted and re-select download location of data with "File->Move Data File To…" " as just mounting the drive won't be enough if a /Volume item got created.

Here is a perfect example of why "Since, if "File->Move Data File To…" is correctly done, the application now knows the location of the data, the error should auto-cleared and the torrent auto-resumed (if it was initially in that state) in order to avoid further user confusion." would be helpful.

"I had tried that suggestion from the same thread before and thought it was not working since the "error, no data found" message remained in the tracker. However, checking the torrent in the info window showed the link was re-established. Clicking "resume" worked, and corrected the message in the tracker."

  • Component changed from libtransmission to Transmission
  • Resolution set to wontfix
  • Status changed from new to closed

I really don't think this change is necessary.

here is a patch for this WONTFIX enhancement that allows a re-verify after the 'no data found' and then allows resume-now or start-now to start the torrent without re-adding of the torrent. This helps with magnet links or when you haven't saved the original torrent file, saving you from having to extract the actual .torrent file from your config directory to do so otherwise. Also helps when you purposely delete the download's data but want to continue using the torrent. Be aware if user error was the case for the 'no data found' and after re-verify and resume-now, that downloading will proceed anyway without finding lost data because of user error.

patch is stable but be forewarned as to the above cautions.

I am sure this it is necessary to allow re-verify torents with status "Error: No data found! Ensure your drives are connected or use "Set Location". To re-download, remove the torrent and re-add it.".

I have tens torrents in that status. I got it after temporary filesystem corruption. It is very hard to re-add it in torrent. And it is strange to remove torrent and re-add it only for restart it.
