#4541 closed Enhancement (wontfix)

Group filter for "Any Text"

Description

Fairly simple, but when specifying group criteria, it'd be nice if one of the filters/rules was "Any Text", allowing matching of terms for torrent name, file-name, and comment simultaneously (any text except tracker).

This is primarily for convenience, but it can be a bit of a pain to specify all three as a rule for a lot of common things. For example, if I wanted to separate out my torrents that are 720p and 1080p, into an HD folder, then currently I'd three filters for each in order to search for "720p" and "1080p" in torrent names, file-names and comments.

Just makes for easier criteria creation, especially when you can't guarantee that all torrents are going to follow the same standard, or have the info where you expect, so checking all of these areas can give a greater number of hits.

Behind-the-scenes this could simply be a shortcut for creating the three different filters (and any new text filters in future, if any), it's just for convenience and ease of use.

I'm not sold on this. "Any text" is quite vague, and I could see in the future people wanting more pre-made subsets. Plus I've never seen similar rules views having a composite rules. I'm going to vote no on this, as the benefit of saving a few moments to enter the text is lost by the confusion of what "Any text" actually means.

Oh for… how thick do you think Transmission users actually are? So many features are being cited as confusing with no real justification; "Any Text" means "Any Text", if it's a source of text, then it's filtered by it, what exactly is hard to understand there?

It'd be no more or less confusing than the current "Any File" filter, which is "confusing" in that a torrent is a file yet isn't included, and the filter in fact only searches file names and not files at all; the "Any File" filter has at least three potential meanings and yet people have no trouble with that one!

Please stop reopening every single ticket. Confusing as in "any text" could mean any subset. This doesn't add functionality that doesn't already exist.

I have to re-open them because no-one bloody well responds to comments on closed tickets, and you lot keep closing tickets instead of giving them a chance to be refined or adapted! Even if the flaws you pick out with an issue are valid (though most aren't by the way) then the issues should remain open or in a waiting state where they can actually be discussed and improved into an actionable state, or split off into other tickets as appropriate. Instead you just go around closing everything then ignoring all closed issues; so I'll stop re-opening issues when you start actually reading them instead of just immediately closing them with the same tired argument every time.

Confusing as in "any text" could mean any subset.

Of… ? The only real textual information that I see in a torrent is the name, the file-names, and the comment, which is exactly what "any text" would search; if anyone can think of anything else then by all means, search that too! Tracker I've omitted since they're URL's rather than true text.

The meaning is perfectly clear, and as I've already pointed out, no less "confusing" than the "Any File" filter; if Transmission users can handle "Any File" just fine, then maybe your user base aren't all as stupid as you seem to think?

Besides which, I couldn't give a rat's ass about the wording; if "Any Text" has your underpants in such a sorry state then by all means use a more appropriate term if you can think of one, I don't care, what I'm interested in is the functionality. "Any Text" to me is perfectly clear, and it's certainly clear enough for the purposes of this issue's intent, which is the functionality not the exact branding of the damn thing.

This doesn't add functionality that doesn't already exist.

Wait a second, seriously?! This issue is an ENHANCEMENT, of course it doesn't add any new functionality, it's intended to improve existing functionality, by ENHANCING it!

Maybe you think I go around posting these issues for some kind of perverse kicks, but the truth is I'm a Transmission user, and have been using it for several years now. So I'm only going out of my way to take the time to post, and argue the cases for, features or enhancements that I firmly believe would improve the Transmission user experience. I take time to think about these things, and I only suggest them if I feel that I, and others, would benefit. So put yourself in my shoes for a second, because you seem to be honing the trac mechanism down to a fine art when it comes to frustrating and insulting people that are only trying to help in their own way.

I've had enough with these comments. This adds no new functionality. Please do not reopen this.
