#4748 closed Enhancement (wontfix)

Transmission should notice when I've moved a downloaded file to a new folder

Description

If I move a downloaded file that is still seeding to another folder, I have to do "Move Data File To..." to inform Transmission of the new location. This should be automatic.

Most other MacOS applications notice when files have been moved (or even renamed), e.g., try it in TextEdit?: open a file, move it to a different folder, edit text, "Save". It writes it to the new place, not the old place.

Use case:

  • I've downloaded a video.
  • I've watched the video.
  • I want to move it from my "Unwatched" folder to my "Watched" folder.
  • But I still want to continue seeding it until it reaches its ratio before deleting it.

Ideally, I could just drag it from Finder, without also having to go into Transmission and mess around.

I guess this is related to some of the issues discussed in https://trac.transmissionbt.com/ticket/3852

  • Resolution set to wontfix
  • Status changed from new to closed

This is unfortunately not feasible because of the time needed to move files. Renaming would break torrent hashes.

Your reply doesn't make sense to me. I'm talking about automating a process that can currently be accomplished manually by selecting a menu item (in zero time, and without breaking anything). So I think you must have misunderstood what I'm asking for.

I'm not talking about renaming the files inside the torrent -- just moving the whole thing to a different directory, as if I had specified a different data directory before beginning the download.

The inode stays the same.

Moving files with Transmission isn't always such a cheap and fast process. It can't be guaranteed to finish in a quick enough amount of time.

I am not asking for Transmission to move any files.

I am asking it to automatically notice when the file has *already been moved*, without me having to select a menu item first.
