#5468 closed Enhancement (wontfix)

Check for Updates before connecting to Torrents to prevent hammering

Reported by: LordOfTheRings Owned by: livings124
Priority: Normal Milestone: None Set
Component: Mac Client Version: 2.82
Severity: Normal Keywords: hammer updating
Cc: LordOfTheRings

Description

Request: Transmission checks for updates before connecting to torrent tracker servers when the program opens.

Reason: With Transmission connecting to torrents, then announcing an update which installs and restarts the program, this results in 'Hammering'. For private torrents it can put the torrents out of action for over an hour with message meaning (disallowed connection due to "hammering" the tracker; "too many connections".)

This same 'Hammering' principle applies to both public and private torrents, not good for torrent tracker servers. The 'check for updates' process before connecting is such a simple concept and should not be difficult to implement.

This is definitely a problem, but I'm not sure the solution is better than no solution. Delaying activity until an update check is performed would cause a slowdown in the app actually starting and being usable. The fact that no one has ever mentioned this before makes me hesitant, since it would have quite an impact. I believe it's probably better for you to just hold off on clicking the restart button, or disable auto-update checks and update from the website.

Yes it is a serious issue when it breaches basic bittorrent protocol. But what the hell. :D Let the trackers suffer hey. (tongue in cheek joke)
