#5625 new Enhancement

Proxy Support

Reported by: quaff Owned by:

Description

I am hoping we can start a new conversation about adding proxy support back to Transmission. Tracker & p2p. Given that privacy is such a big issue in the news recently, I hope you great devs would reconsider adding proxy support back.

I know it was removed as bloat and a unused feature 3 years ago, but we currently have a chicken and egg issue. Anyone who needs proxy support is not going to use Transmission, because it doesn't support proxies. Transmission devs don't think users want proxy support cause the only users left are the ones that don't care or are using system-wide solutions (which is not ideal for everyone).

For me, application-level proxy support is a necessary feature of a torrent client, since I am inside a campus network that blocks all but http and https traffic.

As such, I am forced now to use utorrent under wine (although I would prefer a native Linux solution), with traffic routed through tor.

Everything else, as you can see in that thread and many other threads, is from people who doesn't know what they are talking about, or just lie for their own purpose.

Again, the comments in that thread were made over 3 years ago. This merits new discussion. AFAIK the issue is proxying uTP connections. But Transmission gives us the option to turn disable uTP connections. I'm not a very good developer myself, so I'm not gonna pretend to know everything on the subject, I merely think this discussion should be renewed.

I'd like to have proxy support back in Transmission. I can't bring myself to use Vuze. Their UI is awful. I have no delusions that proxy support will hide what I'm doing. I'm only seeking to deter any potential simple monitoring of tracker traffic. I'm satisfied with the encryption of p2p traffic, but since not all trackers use https, I'd like to have the ability of use a proxy for tracker traffic to bypass any potential sniffing by my ISP.

+1, would love to see SOCK5 support for P2P, trackers, everything. Deluge has this and it's sorely missed in Transmission.

Note: See TracTickets for help on using tickets.
