Set Finder comments of downloaded files to torrent URL

Description

In order to more easily keep track of what site a particular file or files were downloaded from, Transmission should set the Finder comment of downloaded files to the URL of the torrent used to download them. That way, when looking back at downloaded files, the user can look in the comment field in the Finder to determine where they originally got the files.

There are a couple different URLs that could be used:

  1. If the torrent itself has a URL in its Finder comment field, that URL could simply be transferred to the downloaded files
  1. The torrent's announce URL

Sample code for setting a Finder comment can be found in the OmniAppKit? framework at omnigroup.com. Similar code can be used to retrieve an existing Finder comment, or it can be retrieved using the Spotlight kMDItemFinderComment key, or under Leopard, also the kMDItemWhereFroms key.

  • Component changed from Transmission to OS X Interface
  • Owner set to livings124

  • Resolution set to wontfix
  • Status changed from new to closed

This is more useful in Safari, where users could redownload the file just by entering the url; this is not the case with bittorrent. Also, I have the feeling users in general would prefer the files to not be tagged with this information.
