Transmission speed problems with Apple Aiport Extreme Base Station

Reported by: feju Owned by: charles
Priority: Normal Milestone: None Set
Component: libtransmission Version: 1.04
Severity: Normal Keywords: Speed, "Airport Extreme"

Ever since I got the Apple Airport Extreme Base Station a few weeks ago, Transmission seems to be having problems achieving down- and upload speeds I used to get with my old LinkSys? WRT-54GL router. I have an 25/2.5 Mbit/s Cable connection, my Macbook Pro is connected to the router via the 1Gbit/s ethernet connection and I'm running 10.5 Leopard. Before the Airport Extreme upgrade, I used to download at 1.7 to 2 MByte/s. My upload usually maxed out at about 300Kbyte/s. Today my download speeds reach a maximum of 1.5 MByte/s. However, I've noticed that speeds are varying a lot. They often drop to 200KByte/s instantly and then slowly increase to 900KByte/s drop again and maybe get up to 1.5MByte/s again. To test things, I've tried Azureus. Azureus maxes out my connection on the exact same torrent I tried with Transmission. I get very constant download speeds at about 1.7Mbyt/s or even 2Mbyte/s using Azureus. So I figure Transmission must somehow kill my Airport Extreme or somthing. I've kept the default settings for the maximum number of connection connections in Transmission (also tried different values).

Hm OK, I just reached a download peak of 2.3MByte/s. But then the speed immediately dropped to 300KByte/s. I tried to attach my Shark profiles of Transmission, but they seem to be to big for Trac.

  • Component changed from Transmission to Mac Client
  • Owner set to livings124

Try lowering your connection limit in the preferences dialog.

I've tried setting the connection limit to 100 instead of 250. The problem got even worse. Download speeds didn't even get to 1MByte/s and the kept dropping to 200KByte/s. I also noticed that Transmission has always been grinding my hdd pretty hard - both the internal drive or the network drive, when used.

This ticket is all over the map -- I'm not sure where to begin.

Is the CPU spiking? If not, the shark report isn't necessary.

Is your hard drive heavily fragmented? If so you may need to defragment it.

Is NAT-PMP working and is your port open with the Airport Extreme?
