#709 closed Bug (invalid)

Transmission hogs the sound device

Description

I usually start Transmission via Firefox and everything works fine. However, when I have to restart Firefox while Transmission is running, sound doesn't play in videos anymore. The sound doesn't work in any other program I tried until I close Transmission.

I am running Ubuntu 7.10 (gutsy).

While sound isn't working:

niran@mog:~$ lsof /dev/snd/pcm*
COMMAND PID USER FD TYPE DEVICE SIZE NODE NAME
transmiss 13903 niran 79u CHR 116,6 15093 /dev/snd/pcmC0D0p

Hi natrius. Thanks for reporting this bug.

This is not a Transmission bug, but rather a Firefox one.

After a little digging I found that people were complaining about Evince a lot for the same reason. An Ubuntu ticket was filed at https://bugs.launchpad.net/evince/+bug/102408 and an upstream ticket can be found at http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=371822 . The final comment in the latter says this:

"it seems that Firefox does not close file descriptors when it spawns helper apps - hence if firefox has the audio dev open (quite often the case after using Flash etc) then evince inherits the open audio descriptor and hangs onto it - even after Firefox quits."

There is an open Firefox ticket for this issue at https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=147659 .

Note: See TracTickets for help on using tickets.
