To make the life of the translators easier and ease integration with automated systems (like, ubuntu rosetta, etc), could you guys generate a POT file and include it in the source package on release time?

I'm afraid I don't understand this ticket.

What's wrong with typing "make transmission.pot" in the po directory?

(was I supposed to get a copy from this reply? I just saw it doing a random check on filed bugs...)

Sorry, I should have explained it better: the automated systems I mentioned work on the original source files. I - as the Debian maintainer - could generate it during package build, but that would mean either of the following two sub-optimal situations:

1) include it in the source package and "repack" it, making our distributed tar.gz different than yours for no big reason (we prefer sticking to the original source whenever possible, to avoid as much diversion as feasable, I'm sure you understand).

2) generate it during compile-time. This means more work for the translations systems AND the automatic building systems (both from Debian and from Ubuntu, probably), since it would have to install the package to get the POT, instead of just taking it out of the source, where it fits better, IMHO.

For these reasons I wanted to suggest that you guys generate it on release-time and ship it in the source, since it's not a big problem for you and could spare us some work. Not to mention the (admittedly very small) ease for the manual translators, that can directly edit it from source, without having to install gettext.

Just FYI, it's also filed as a Debian bug:

Please consider the possibility! Thanks!

I just tested out a couple of handfuls of gnome app tarballs, and it appears that shipping the .pot file is not a standard practice... IMO your option (1) is probably the best way to handle this.
