Why are my downloads stopping all the time?

Transmission may pause your downloads unexpectedly sometimes. This article explains some common triggers for that behaviour.

  • Your filesystem may be full. Check if you have enough free space left on your filesystem.
  • Your filesystem may be corrupt. Use a filesystem utility like fsck or Disk Utility to check your filesystem for errors
  • Your harddrive may be defective.

Defective Filesystem

If your filesystem is defective, transmission may write the the following message to its logs:

generic i/o errno from errno: Operation now in progress

At the same time there should be some new entries in your syslog that look a bit like this:

Aug 19 03:26:27 kernel: attempt to access beyond end of device
Aug 19 03:26:27 kernel: 08:03: rw=0, want=449970180, limit=384057922
Aug 19 03:26:27 kernel: EXT3-fs error (device sd(8,3)): read_block_bitmap: Cannot read block bitmap - block_group = 3433, block_bitmap = 112492544
